Chandeliers

A chandelier is primarily installed as a decorative ceiling-mounted fixture with two or more arms or branches providing the lighting. Early models were used mainly in places where people need to assemble. The lighting was intended to impress visitors and put people in awe at such extravagance. Illumination was made secondary. Most chandeliers have one thing in common: they are ornately-designed with dozens of lamps and multiple layers of glass or crystal prisms to refract the light. Early chandeliers used candles for lighting and were hanged from the ceiling using ropes or chains. The medieval developments in glass making led to the discovery and manufacturing of crystals, which offered greater refractive lights. This then led to the widespread popularity of chandeliers during that time. Members of the nobility such as the Kings and Queens, Dukes and Duchesses, Counts and Countesses installed chandeliers in their royal homes.

Modern chandeliers use lamps or bulbs powered by electricity. Most of the chandeliers are usually hanged in the main drawing room or in the dining room. Chandeliers can add a romantic touch to elaborate dinners. Some chandeliers are of antique or contemporary designs. Many of them are made of ordinary iron or wrought iron to make it a bit sturdy because it is heavy. They can also be made of glass, brass or bronze. Copper is not advisable as that metal is considered too soft. After candles, gas lights were used to light up chandeliers but the introduction of electricity made chandeliers more of a reminder of a glorious past. Today, they are used mainly for decoration rather than illumination. However, chandeliers can be used to dramatic effects to improve the house’s interiors.
